Banff Grizzly Remembered by Calgary Zoo

The Calgary Zoo has published a grizzly bear edition of their Member magazine to educate young people across Calgary and the rest of the province about the perils that our Alberta grizzlies face. The cover photo is one most of you will recognize, as it's the photo of Dawn, the mother mother grizzly that was killed out by Lake Louise earlier this year, playing with one of her yearling cubs just a day before her death.

The Calgary Zoo's member magazine remembers Dawn, the female grizzly bear killed by Lake Louise in May

Check out the informative story on Dawn, as well as a great article on Skoki, another Lake Louise bear that was removed from the Banff population years ago and who now serves his time at the Calgary Zoo thrilling and educating visitors with his majestic presence and sad tale.

Hope you enjoy the images and stories.

Orca and Humpback Photo Tour

Hi everyone.  I've been silent of late, but that's not because I've been slacking off, but rather because I've been working on several different book projects out in the field close to home.

Last weekend marked the beginning of my tour and workshop season, as I taught seven participants the ins and outs of landscape and wildflower photography in the stunning Bugaboo Mountains of British Columbia with Canadian Mountain Holidays heli-hiking adventures.  It was an absolutely glorious weekend and I am going to say it again: there are few things as good as combining the spectacular environs of the Bugaboos with photography and heli-hiking.

A morning snapshot of participants on the Bugaboos Nature Photography Workshop as they ditch their tripods
and start wandering about in the great light.

Things went so well, in fact, that we've already set dates for next year's workshop, which will again be at CMH's Bugaboo Lodge from July 30th-August 2nd, 2012.  Stay tuned for further details and booking information in mid-September.

This week I embark on four weeks of photography scouting, tours, and workshops, including next week's Orca Marine Photography Tour in search of killer whales, humpback whales, sea lions, dolphins, seals, porpoises, sea otters, and more!  There are still two final spots remaining on this tour, and we've dropped the price by $1,000 to fill the trip, so please let me know asap if you're interested in booking one of these final spots.

Here are a few images from last year's adventures in Johnstone Strait to whet your appetite:

Hopefully I'll be able to send out updates from the road, so watch on here as well as on my Facebook fan page and Twitter account for news of my adventures.

Happy shooting!

John
